CAE Phonics and Phonetics

Are You Confident You Can Pronounce This Word Properly?

  • CACHE

This is a relatively common word that many people mispronounce. It's deceptively simple. [Cash-shay] is one of the most common ways people pronounce this. However, "cachet", pronounced as [cash-shay], is another word and meaning entirely.

The proper way to pronounce this is /kæʃ/. It is pronounced the same as the word "cash".

Even if you got that right, how confident are you that you aren’t mispronouncing some of these other common words?

  • Luxury
  • Mischievous
  • Motor
  • Salmon

Accurate command of English phonetics and phonology is crucial for educators working in early years and primary sectors. Systematic teaching of the 8 stages of phonics can improve early childhood spelling and literacy by up to 2 years.
