You’ve seen posts after posts on social media from people who seemingly are living their best life. In this day and age, getting inundated with stories of people living successful lives is common.
It’s not hard to feel like you’re doing something wrong and missing out. Many of these stories being shared around are from young people who seem to be travelling the world and making money while doing it. They seem to know exactly what they are doing, and it might make you feel inadequate.
How are these young kids able to know what they want out of life and what they want to do when they barely have reached adulthood?
The thing is that you’re most likely doing something now. You’re probably doing relatively well for yourself; but there’s a good chance you’ve been thinking about what it is you’ve been doing with your life. For whatever reason, you probably didn’t think too much about what you wanted to do with your life. Maybe it was decided for you by your parents. Maybe you started doing something and just stuck with it; but you never sat down to consider if this was really what you wanted to do with your life.
You wouldn’t be wrong to ask how these people are so sure about themselves and their lives.
The reality is that for many people, they generally aren’t sure what they’re doing. They are just doing it. Some people fall into it and stick with it because they like it. Others do what they’re doing now because that’s what they studied for or that’s what they’ve eventually become a subject matter expert for.
If you don’t know what you’re really doing with your life. That’s OK. Life is about growing, learning, and changing. What you started out wanting to do may not be what you want to do now, or even in the future. There’s already a good chance you’re doing something you’re perfectly happy doing, but you’re curious about what else the world has to offer you.
If you compare yourself to someone else, especially on social media, you might feel inadequate; but just keep in mind that this is only a tiny slice of their life. They are just like anyone else. In their daily life, they are making decisions that they are unsure about, and may be questioning if it’s the right direction or not.
When you start thinking about your life and what you think you should or could be doing, you really need to sit down and give yourself some time and space for self-reflection. This time is precious, and even if you don’t come to any immediate realisation or understanding, every bit helps to unravel who you are and what it is you really want out of yourself, and out of life.
There is no single answer that will satisfy everyone as you’re all unique; but you do need the proper tools to really assess yourself and your situation.A major part of that tool kit is education, and valuing yourself enough to allocate your precious time to this inward journey to self-discovery.
There’s a good chance you already know where the road to happiness is for yourself; you just don’t know exactly how to get onto it.
Join us at College of Allied Educators to learn more about yourself, what motivates you, and how you can find happiness, meaning, and success in work, love, and life.
