From what people know about counsellors, they may very well appear superhuman. They seem to always be in control, have their life together, and are well balanced emotionally and psychologically. When they are helping people through their problems, counsellors are what we think of as people who are altruistic, good listeners, patient, and caring.
The reality is that counsellors are just like everyone else. They aren’t imbued with any special or extraordinary powers. They have good days and bad days where their mood isn’t so great. They may get impatient and angry. Many counsellors also have their own issues to deal with.
Part of what makes them good at what they do is because they understand, to some extent, what you’re going through. They aren’t perfect. Their lives aren’t perfect. They struggle as well.
What sets them apart and why it is easy to put them on a pedestal is because they choose to help. They choose to help because they understand and have empathy for others who may be having a tough time dealing with the intricacies of life. In many ways though, it isn’t just about them helping you to recover. They are also learning how they can better deal with their issues. It’s possible for you to inspire counsellors to deal with their own problems as much as they may help you on your road to recovery.
Counsellors are normal people, with all the flaws and troubles, who have decided they want to help. It often starts by trying to discover more about themselves so they can understand and resolve their internal conflicts, and in the process they learn they can utilise what they know to help people in similar situations.
This is a deep, educational, and meaningful process that will see them learning how to listen better, how to be less judgemental, how to reach out to people, and see where they are hurting emotionally and psychologically. These are skills they learn to develop.
Many counsellors don’t start their career as counsellors. They could have once been in finance, business, or done any number of things before becoming a counsellor. It could have been a journey they started early in their life or late in their life; but it is typically defined by a pressing desire to do something meaningful.
The thing is, you are probably exactly like this. You are looking for something deeper, more meaningful. You probably have internal conflicts you need to look into, and want to understand about yourself. You’ve probably already done some of the preparation work without realising it by being available to your friends and family when they are in need.
Counsellors are people like you who have taken the step forward because you know in your heart this is a road meant for you.
Join us at College of Allied Educators to learn more about yourself, what motivates you, and how you can find happiness, meaning, and success in work, love, and life.
