Doctorate of Counselling Psychology

Delivered collaboratively by York St John University and College of Allied Educators, the Doctorate of Counselling Psychology course provides the essential theoretical, clinical and research training for those wishing to work as a Counselling Psychologist.

You will engage and be exposed to:

  • Psychological assessment
  • Psychotherapeutic interventions
  • Clinical research methods
  • Ethics and professional practice
  • Minimum of 450 hours of placement in clinical settings.

You will undertake modules that develop the professional skills required of leaders and supervisors and for working in diverse, multi-disciplinary teams. You will gain professional training in relevant theory, research and therapeutic skills. The Doctorate of Counselling Psychology course takes a humanistic approach to reducing psychological distress and promoting the wellbeing of children, adolescents, adults, couples, families and other groups.

The objective of the Doctorate of Counselling Psychology at York St John University are to produce graduates who will:

Assessment is a combination of written/practical exams and written assignments, as well as:

  • Practicum: 450 hours
  • Clinical supervision within placement: 45 hours
  • Thesis: 35,000 to 45,000 words

  • Age: 25 years old or older
  • Language: English IELTS level 6.0 (with no skill below 5.5) or its equivalence
  • Academic: Recognised undergraduate Psychology course or a masters in a related discipline

To support your application, you will need:

  • Two references and a personal statement (1,200 words maximum) which includes a small statement of intent that takes into consideration work life balance.
  • Research proposal (500- words maximum). This should include a research question applicable to an area of Counselling Psychology, with clearly defined methodology and a plan for analysis.
  • Your current most up to date CV that makes clear both your clinical work experiences and qualifications.
  • Interview by YSJU. Admission to the course is competitive, and shortlisted applicants are required to attend interviews as the selection process strives to consider multiple aspects and qualities of the applicants. In accordance with the values of Counselling Psychology, the interview process is underpinned by principles of social justice and humanism.
