In a world where you are constantly bombarded with images of what you should look like, what you should wear, what you should eat, and how you should behave, it can be challenging to find your authentic self. It’s easy to get lost in the noise of expectations, and it wouldn’t be uncommon for you to feel like they don’t know who you truly are.
There’s even more to it when you consider the expectations that are placed upon you by friends and family, colleagues, bosses, and all this on top of having to comply with societal ideals and expectations. It can be really daunting, and you might have found yourself wondering if this is really you or just what society expects of you.
However, finding your authentic self is not an impossible task. It’s even a journey that can be incredibly fulfilling and empowering. Here are some methods for discovering who you really might be:
Identifying your core values and beliefs
Take some time to reflect on what matters most to you. What are your core values? What do you believe in? What principles guide your decisions and actions? Knowing your values and beliefs will help you make choices that align with your authentic self.
Finding comfort in solitude
Being alone can often be scary. In fact, most people seem to fear being alone; but solitude can be a powerful tool for self-discovery. When you’re alone, you can tune out the world’s distractions and focus on your inner self and your own thoughts and feelings. Maintaining a journal, meditating, or simply sitting in silence can yield a wealth of knowledge about yourself.
Paying attention to your feelings
Your emotions can often be a powerful indicator of what you should pay attention to when encountering different situations and events. Do these things make you feel happy and energised, or drained and depleted? Your feelings can be a guide to help you make decisions that are in alignment with what is true for you.
Trusting in your intuition
Your intuition is a powerful inner voice that can guide you towards your authentic self. When faced with a decision, listen to your gut. Very often, you already know the best way forward, but the noise of everything around you can drown this out. Often, your intuition may lead you into scary and uncertain territory, but sometimes this path is the one that is most aligned with your true self.
Embracing your unique qualities
One of the biggest barriers to finding your authentic self is the fear of being different. It’s easy to get caught up in the idea of fitting in and being accepted by others. However, embracing your uniqueness is essential to discovering your true self. Celebrate your quirks and idiosyncrasies and remember that being who you are is more important than being similar to everyone else.
Finding your authentic self is not something you do once and then you’re done; it’s an ongoing process. As you grow, change, mature, and develop, so too will your understanding of who you are. Sometimes this could even end up in a reversal of parts of your identity. Finding yourself and staying true to yourself can be a journey of self-discovery that is both fulfilling and empowering.
