How do I find meaning when I don’t have any purpose?

How do I find meaning when I don’t have any purpose?

When you’re young, you’re not typically looking for the meaning of life, or any particular meaning to things you do. You tend to go with the flow. Sure, a few might know what they are doing and why; but for most people, it’s not a big question at that point in life. It’s later when a you’ve gone through a decade or more of work and life experience that this question starts to crop up.

Not only does this question crop up, but for many people, it may occupy an enormous amount of their waking thought. After working for years, it’s common to hit an emotional and mental wall within yourself. You’re doing the same thing, day in and day out. Eventually you’ll start asking about the meaning of it.

If this is happening to you, and you’re thinking about this as you lay in bed, or during your quiet time on lunch breaks, then you should really give it some real attention. It is your life, after all. You have to make it what you feel it needs to be.

However, there’s another common problem. Maybe you don’t know your purpose. That is to say, you have no clue about why you were put on this Earth. You have no clue what you’re doing, even if you’re good at doing it.

How will you be able to derive any meaning from your life when you don’t know what your life is about?

These are big questions; questions that will take you months and years to figure out. No article can really help you with that. Only you can do this.

You start one step at a time. Move from just thinking about it to acting. Take stock and assess your life, your values, things you have and are grateful for, and things you feel are missing from your life.

The process of discovery and learning about yourself is meaningful and important. You may find that learning about yourself is what sets you off on a new life journey. You may find it leads you right back to where you are now, and that’s as perfect as if you discovered your purpose and meaning somewhere else. You just have to start.

This first step is difficult because nobody can really guide you. You have to do the work all by yourself. However, you can learn. You can find the tools, and methods to help with self-discovery. If you’re going on this process, you’ll likely end up using these tools to help other people, and not just yourself. In some ways, you probably already know the answer to what you’re seeking; you just haven’t found the right way to admit it to yourself.

Join us at College of Allied Educators to learn more about yourself, what motivates you, and how you can find happiness, meaning, and success in work, love, and life.
