Anxiety is an uneasy feeling that includes worry and fear. It can vary in intensity and be severe or mild. Regardless, anxiety feels terrible and can contribute to a lot of negativity in your life.
Anxiety is a negative feeling you have that can cause physical and mental changes for you, and they aren’t good.
Anxiety can cause:
- feelings of restlessness
- nausea
- heart palpitations,
- excessive sweating
- churning and discomfort in the stomach
In more severe cases, anxiety can lead to panic attacks which is when your body goes into overdrive as if it were under direct danger. This could cause dizziness, hyperventilation, trembling, even physical pain. Mentally, it can cause you to hyper-focus on situations in a negative way and prevent you from clearly being able to see and assess situations in your life. You can often end up over-reacting to simple things, blow up and push people away from you who may be innocent, and cause you to make ill-informed decisions about your life, career, relationships, and finances.
When you’ve gone for long periods with this feeling of anxiety, it may make it difficult to properly enjoy and be thankful for the good things in your life. In the end, this could easily end in depression and put you in a situation where you end up manifesting the very things you’re anxious about.
Overcoming anxiety isn’t quick or easy
While it’s true that overcoming anxiety isn’t usually quick or easy, there are ways to work around it, and over time, you can take charge of it instead of having it ruin your life.
There are actually many ways to deal with anxiety, at least in the short term. Keeping yourself physically fit, and eating properly can and does help to keep your body relaxed and feeling good. You also have to get enough sleep. That’s probably the easiest thing to do, but due to how many people live their lives nowadays, sleep is one of the first thing to get sacrificed; and that contributes to a host of problems. Lack of sleep can cause your body to become imbalanced chemically, and mentally; which can make you more susceptible to feelings of anxiousness.
You have to set aside time for yourself to think about what it is about your life that’s causing the anxiety. Remember that dismissing minor anxiety can cause it to spiral out of control. Take the time to consider the causes.
The cause could work. It could be deadlines you fear you can’t meet, or responsibilities you feel you aren’t up to, or it could very well be due to uncertainty for the future. It may no even be work and be interpersonal relationships causing you this anxiety. You have to think about what it is so you can find ways to deal with it.
Whenever you start feeling anxious, take a step back, take a break, breath, clear your head, and give yourself some space away from your tasks and responsibilities. You may also consider talking to someone about it. Counsellors are trained, educated, and experienced in this area and taking the step to talk to them could put you on the road to dealing with your anxiety for the long-term.
Even if that is too drastic a measure, consider talking to family and friends about it. Often, verbalising our frustrations, worries, fears can take away much of their power and alleviate a great weight off the shoulders.
Once you start consistently respecting that you need time and consideration for yourself, you’ll start to see improvements to how you look at and feel about your job, career, relationships, and even how you feel about yourself. It’s one more step towards finding where your happiness is.
Join us at College of Allied Educators to learn more about yourself, what motivates you, and how you can find happiness, meaning, and success in work, love, and life.
