The Master of Science in Applied Psychology is designed to equip students with a deep understanding of applied psychology and its application in provision of psychological client care and treatment through evidence-based practice.

Delivered collaboratively by Aston University and the College of Allied Educators (CAE), this program offers a comprehensive blend of theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and clinical experience in applied psychology and its application in the provision of psychological client care and treatment.

Applied psychology is a broad field that encompasses the practical application of psychological principles, theories, and research to address a wide range of real-world issues and challenges. Applied psychologists work in a wide range of settings, from clinical and educational settings to organizational, sports, and health-related environments.

The delivery method of this course is a combination of online distance learning, clinical training and campus-based seminars/workshops at the College of Allied Educators (CAE) campus.

What you will learn

Delivered collaboratively by Aston University and the College of Allied Educators (CAE), the MSc applied psychology equips students with knowledge, skills, and practical experience to pursue a successful, rewarding career in clinical psychology. Throughout the 15-month part-time programme, students will explore social psychology, brain and behaviour, cognition and cognitive neuropsychology, and psychology and well-being.

Candidates who have completed a postgraduate diploma in a related field are eligible to apply.

Course Objectives:

  • Provides you with opportunities to realise your academic potential through a range of learning experiences.
  • Encourages you, through a practical approach, to have a passion for applied psychology and an enthusiasm for learning.
  • Provides an in-depth and high level of scientific knowledge and understanding of the principles and practice of applied psychology, and how this knowledge is being applied in the wider field of psychology.
  • Enables you to develop an informed and critical appreciation of recent scientific and clinical developments in relation to a range of psychology topics.
  • Produces highly employable postgraduates who can bring qualities of critical analysis, synthesis, evaluation, and personal interpretation to their chosen occupation.

You will study the following modules:

  1. Social Psychology - Social psychology explores the dynamic interplay between individuals and their social environment. In this module, you will delve into topics such as social influence, attitudes, group dynamics, and interpersonal relationships.
  2. Brain and Behaviour - This module introduces the intricate relationship between the brain and human behaviour, delving into topics including perception, memory, emotion, and motivation. This module also explores neuroscience and its implications for understanding and treating psychological disorders.
  3. Cognition and Cognitive Neuropsychology - You will explore how cognitive processes such as perception, memory, language, and problem-solving operate. The module will also investigate the impact of neurological conditions and brain injuries on cognitive functioning.
  4. Psychology & Wellbeing - The Psychology and Wellbeing module investigates the relationship between psychological factors and overall well-being. It looks at how thoughts and feelings affect overall happiness and health and how to improve mental well-being.

Dissertation stage module

In the dissertation stage, you will study the following core module:

  1. Research Project in Applied Psychology

Assessment includes written and oral examinations, class tests, individual and group coursework, projects, presentations, and practical assessments.

  • Applicants will be graduates of the Postgraduate Diploma in Counselling Psychology, and Graduate Diploma Counselling Psychology course at the College of Allied Educators. Applicants with prior learning and similar postgraduate diploma may be assessed on a case by case basis.
  • Where applicable, applications should be supported by a reference, either academic or professional; All applicants should satisfy the Aston University English language requirements, IELTS 6.0 with no skill below 5.5 or an equivalent award.
  • Depending on the nature of the research project, local processes will need to be followed regarding police checks or similar for projects with participants who are at risk adults or children.
