You might have heard people mention ADD and ADHD in normal conversation. ADD and ADHD are in common use in the population but do people really know what they mean? Do you know the difference between ADD and ADHD?
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a condition where the person may be hyperactive, impulsive, and lack the ability to control their immediate impulses. Children with ADHD usually display signs very early on in their childhood, with symptoms that range from:
- Hyperactivity and restlessness
- Extreme impulsivity
- Inability to focus or listen
- Poor attention span
Attention deficit disorder (ADD) is a type of ADHD and although it is sometimes used interchangeably with ADHD, a person with ADD has issues with focussing and this particularly makes school difficult as they are easily distracted and have a hard time paying attention in class.
The symptoms of ADHD in children are very likely to persist until adulthood, so diagnosing the child early is critical in order to provide them the help they may need.
