Play Therapy is an intervention strategy to help children safely communicate and express their feelings and thoughts naturally in order to deal with trauma, loss, delayed development, and other developmental and social issues. Play therapy is fun, free-flowing, non-directed, and effective. Play therapy allows people who are experiencing emotional or behavioural issues to open up their emotions in the safe space of the ‘playroom’, where they are allowed to face their thoughts and emotions nonverbally.
Several groups can benefit from Play Therapy, including:
- Children with behavioural issues: These are children who may struggle with acting out, aggression, or impulse control. This group may find a safe space in Play Therapy to explore these behaviours and eventually learn how to manage and cope with them.
- Children who struggle to express themselves verbally: For children who are introverted or who have speech delays, Play Therapy can help to expand their avenues of expression through toys, games, and art rather than relying on words.
- Children with Anxiety or Phobias: Children who struggle with specific fears may benefit from Play Therapy as it can help them confront and work through their fears through role play in a safe and secure environment.
While play therapy is often used with children, teens and adults can also benefit, especially those with trauma-related issues or those who may have trouble processing emotions in a traditional therapeutic setting. These can include teens and adults with a history of trauma or those who have experienced significant changes in their lives that they have trouble dealing with.
