Singapore’s educational landscape is evolving rapidly, and with it comes a growing need for educators who can confidently support children with diverse learning needs. The Advanced Diploma in Special Education (ADISE) offered by the College of Allied Educators (CAE) is designed precisely for this purpose — a comprehensive, practice‑oriented programme that equips aspiring and current educators with the knowledge, skills, and mindset to make a meaningful difference in the lives of children with special needs.
CAE’s ADISE is a 12‑month part‑time Advanced Diploma that provides deep, structured training in child development, disability understanding, assessment, intervention, and classroom practice. The programme is designed specifically to train potential candidates to teach children with special needs, and helping you develop competencies in curriculum planning, literacy and numeracy instruction, and individualised intervention strategies
The programme’s objectives emphasise four core capabilities:
- foundational knowledge of child development and disability
- skills in identifying and assessing specific learning difficulties
- competency in adapting teaching methods to individual needs
- ability to plan and evaluate personalised intervention programmes
These competencies are increasingly essential in mainstream classrooms, early childhood settings, learning support roles, and private intervention centres.
One of the strongest features of the ADISE is its hands‑on, applied learning approach. The curriculum begins with the psychology of education and gradually moves into specialised areas such as diagnosis, assessment, behavioural support, and effective teaching practices. The programme is highly practice‑oriented to ensure that what you learn in classes can be applied to children under your care.
Learners engage with modules such as:
- Special Education & Exceptional Children
- Diagnosis, Assessment & Referral
- Literacy, Numeracy & Adaptive Daily Living Skills
- Behaviour & Classroom Management
- Individual Education Plans (IEPs) & Intervention Strategies
- Autism Spectrum Disorders, ADHD, Sensory Integration, and more
This structured progression ensures that you not only understand theory but also develop the practical instincts needed to support children effectively.
Assessment, Practicum, and Real‑World Application
To ensure competency, each module includes written assignments or role‑play assessments, requiring learners to demonstrate understanding and application. Students must also complete a supervised practicum and submit a written report to graduate. This combination of academic learning and real‑world practice helps participants build confidence, refine their teaching approaches, and develop a professional mindset grounded in evidence‑based practice.
At its core, the ADISE programme is a commitment to understanding, supporting, and empowering children who learn differently. With Singapore’s growing emphasis on inclusion and early intervention, trained educators are needed now more than ever.
For anyone who wants to make a real impact in the lives of children with special needs, this 12‑month programme offers a clear, structured, and deeply meaningful pathway into the field.
College of Allied Educators offers our Diploma in Education (Special Needs), that provides an essential introduction to the various categories of exceptional children and educational programmes available.
