We all have some kind of dream for ourselves, and we have an idea of what it is we want for ourselves, even if it is at the most superficial levels. Maybe we thought of being a doctor, a lawyer, a successful business person, or it could be that you had some really crazy ideas about being a superhero.
These thoughts and dreams we have for ourselves are important, even if they sound crazy. In many ways, they help shape how we think of ourselves from a young age, and gives us a type of purpose and direction even before we knew what “purpose and direction” even meant. Yet, many of us don’t reach our dreams.
You could have wanted a more exciting life for yourself, but ended up working a 9 to 5 job where your life revolves around sleeping, and working; and your thoughts about being a successful movie star are nothing but a distant memory relegated to being nothing more than “childish ambitions”.
At some point in our lives, we started making decisions that altered the direction of our lives, and would have far-reaching consequences. For the fortunate and most self-aware, they may realise this early on and are able to make a change; but for most of us, it could take much longer. we might fall into a state of acceptance of our fate, and only decades later realise this path we put ourselves on is unsatisfying.
A lot of us in our thirties, forties, and fifties come to this realisation that while we are able to live and make enough, we may not be satisfied with how things are going. Some of us may simply accept it, while some may be looking for an answer; a new direction and path. Sometimes this change we seek is because we’ve also changed, matured, and are able to look at things in a new way.
However, we eventually come to realise these things; taking action is difficult. We make all kinds of excuses for ourselves why we can’t do something or be something. We could say we’re too old, it’s too late, or we’re not good enough. It could also be that such a drastic change is simply too scary for us.
We have dreams for ourselves because we want something out of our lives; something that might give us some purpose and meaning. It’s perfectly OK if we ended up doing something else, and living a different life; but what if you woke up one day and realised you wanted more, all along?
Do you continue and make excuses and hold yourself back from these dreams, or do you start looking, and start exploring?
Join us at College of Allied Educators to learn more about yourself, what motivates you, and how you can find happiness, meaning, and success in work, love, and life.
