How to know if it’s the right time to do something new!

At some point, everyone will eventually ask if it’s the right time to do something new. Some people may ask this of themselves multiple times in their life, while others may only ask this once or twice.

You could be one of those people who’ve sort of just rolled with what life has thrown at you, and after years of it, maybe you’re feeling like something needs to change.

You could be one of those people who’ve somehow always known what you’ve wanted to do and be, and after doing it successfully, you’re now faced with a deep desire to do something new.

For a lot of us, it typically spells a desire to find something more meaningful for ourselves. It could be something relatively simple, like trying to improve our health or lifestyle. It could also be something more major, like a whole new career or change of life goals. You might even sit on this feeling for years without acting on it, because such changes can be nerve-wracking, and can potentially upend your life. However, there is a danger that sitting on these feelings for too long can end up working against you in the long run. Assessing if it’s the right time to take action can be a difficult thing to do because it requires a leap of faith that your feelings are correct.

That initial leap of faith and belief in what you’re feeling can be incredibly difficult. That feeling didn’t spring from out of nowhere. At some point, you must have done some soul searching, and must have spent countless nights thinking about it. You know you’re missing something; possibly something that didn’t matter years earlier. Now though, it seems to matter because you’ve changed and grown in that time. You’re a different person from ten or twenty years ago. Even the shift from student to a professional can drastically change who you are and what you desire and need.

If what you have now isn’t enough, then you need to seriously consider that you need to take action. If you feel a desire for more meaning and more purpose in your life, and what you’re doing isn’t giving that to you, then you have to take action.

Taking action doesn’t have to be a scary thing. It could be a small step forward, like signing up for a class to learn something new. Once you’ve done that, you can see where that leads. Taking action doesn’t necessarily mean dropping your entire life to run off to do something else. It just means giving yourself permission to do something, no matter how small or scary. Take small steps and see if it fits. Take time to explore and try new things in the direction you feel compelled towards.

If you just sit on your feelings, those feelings will not go away. You’ll always wonder, think, and feel a longing for something. In such a case, you will feel unsatisfied and incomplete, and when that happens, any search for meaning and happiness will lead to a dead-end. Instead, give yourself permission to take a small step forward. Find out who you really want to be, and what is really important to you.

Join us at College of Allied Educators to learn more about yourself, what motivates you, and how you can find happiness, meaning, and success in work, love, and life.
