Before I joined CAE’s counselling psychology programme, I was at a point in my life where I was unsure of what I was doing, even though I had already spent years doing it. I felt unfulfilled, but at the same time felt I was maybe too old to do anything about it.
I was feeling restless and I knew I had to do something. So I started searching for something that felt right for me. I was not the most sociable, but I really liked helping people and people liked talking to me and confiding in me. It was a skill that I treasured but never gave much thought towards until I found out about College of Allied Educator’s counselling psychology programmes. I knew right away this fit me; I just wasn’t sure how. I also wasn’t really prepared to let my current career go; at least not yet.
I went for CAE’s free course preview and I became excited, and hopeful. They really gave me a sense that my personal skill and interests was something that had value and deserved to be nurtured.
The counselling psychology programmed I enrolled in was a fascinating eye-opener. I was learning from industry professionals who came in detailing the many different struggles that people go through in their lives, and how so many people felt so lost and unfulfilled; something that hit close to home for me. We learned the different ways to help people in different situations, including fine-tuning our other soft skills like listening, and learning how not to judge people for their circumstances or choices in life. I developed a much deeper sense of myself along the way, and felt more compassion towards people in my life.
Just as surprising was how it changed how I started viewing my own life. Starting this journey in this programme, I couldn’t really help but to also self-reflect on my own situation and choices. Studying with CAE opened my eyes to the fact that so many people were just like me; looking for a little meaning, a little direction, unsure about myself, unsure about the future, and looking for my own piece of happiness.
I find myself more hopeful now about myself and the future. The personal skill that I had appreciated but never developed has become the very thing that giving me renewed hope. The more I learn at CAE, the more confident I become that there is a future helping others find some comfort, and a bit of happiness in their lives.
