Have you ever felt like hiding from the world?

Have you ever felt like hiding from the world?

Every now and then, we get the urge to hide and isolate ourselves from the world. It’s not an uncommon fantasy to entertain the possibility of hiding out in some secluded place where nobody can bother us, and where the burdens on our shoulders are no longer necessary or existent.

There’s a reason why people want to escape and hide from the world.

When we consider how many of us live in cities, this might even be a more commonplace thought and feeling than we might initially assume. For people who have lived in the big cities for a while, they may have gotten a sense that life is just generally more stressful. You aren’t alone in thinking or feeling that way. Some studies have suggested that people who live in cities have 21% greater likelihood of developing anxiety disorders or suffering from mood disorders.

City life is more stressful than the rural life. There are many reasons for this. Some of these may be:

The congestion
In the city, life is congested. People are packed closely together. Public transport is filled with people, cars fill the streets and slow travel to a crawl, and every available space has concrete structures and building on them. This can put you in a state where you feel surrounded and trapped. There’s simply not enough space to breath, expand, and be truly free. People in the city are in a state of always fighting for space.

The cost of living
City living can be costly. Due to generally higher population density, housing tends to be more expensive, entertainment may be more plentiful, but it is costly. Food and necessities are sometimes more costly. The cost of living in the city requires that people push themselves to make more money because it never seems like it is enough. This expectation is enough to cause people to lose sleep as they work multiple jobs or extra hours in order to advance their careers so they can make more.

The loneliness
Many people living in cities suffer from a deep sense of loneliness. It doesn’t seem like this should be since there’s plenty of people around, but people in cities tend to live isolated in their bubbles. Due to potential crime and lack of personal space and privacy, there’s less of a sense for people to know their neighbors. People feel the need to protect what little privacy and space they do have, and people can tend to become impersonal.

While some may blow this off as being “all in the head”, it remains that people who live in the city experience enough of this stress to be more prone to anxiety and mood disorders. It can also contribute to depression levels, and hopelessness many people feel. These feelings are real and the effects are noticeable and must be dealt with.

Chances are you know people who are going through rough patches in their life, and going through bouts of anxiety or even depression. Many of these problems, even if not caused by city life, is exacerbated by the kind of life we live in cities like Singapore, Hong Kong, and similar.

Would you be able to see who is in distress and in need of help, and are you really sure you are capable of helping them or even yourself?
