There are a lot of questions you will ask yourself, eventually. At some point, one of these questions will be about how you find meaning. People start asking this question from very early in their life. They may not have any answer, forget about the question, then find themselves thinking about it later in their life and career.
This may happen for many people who have already established their careers, or just had decades of years of life that they’ve already experienced.
In today’s fast paced society, we live according to a template, and a schedule for that template. You go to school, graduate, get a job, get married, have children. For most of us, we’ll spend our entire lives dedicated to this process. It may help us get from one day to the next, one year to the next, but it doesn’t tell us anything else important.
Isn’t there some meaning to what we’re doing?
This question becomes especially important for people who’ve already started down the path of their work and career. They’ve already established themselves but may find the question nagging at the back of their minds about what it is they are doing, and why it is important to them.
You might be asking this question now, but nobody can give you this answer. You can’t extract it from the template and schedule of your life. You have to ask yourself what it is that is meaningful to you, specifically.
- Are you looking for meaning in your life in general?
- Are you looking for meaning in your current personal situation, whatever that may be?
- Are you looking for meaning in your career?
Most often, meaning comes from doing. You have to step out of your scheduled life and try something. Maybe you have an idea of something you want to try that isn’t what you’re currently doing. You should try it and see where that leads. It might end up leading nowhere and you’re right back at where you started but you’ll learn something important about yourself.
Maybe by trying it out, you find something important and meaning in that, for you. It could be helping people, it could be helping animals or solving some of the world’s problems, even if it is just in the smallest ways.
A designer may be asked a question of why they became an, and that artist may reply, “I became an artist so I could make the world a little bit more beautiful, in my own small way.”
Some people are blessed to have such clarity. For most of us, we have to find it along the way, and possibly much later on in our lives. We may have to change what it is we are doing, and maybe even step out of our comfort zone to find the answer. The search starts first with the question and then trying to figure out who it is we are as a person.
