Anxiousness over the future is something that is common and pretty much everyone has to deal with it in some capacity or another. It’s called anticipatory anxiety and is seen as a common response to uncertainty over what is to come. While it can sometimes feel overwhelming and uncomfortable, some degree of worry over the future can actually help us to better prepare ourselves for the uncertainty. Worry about the future can be an issue once it becomes excessive.
When the level of anxiety you’re experiencing is persistent and excessive, it can interfere with the quality of your life and your daily activities. Being overly anxious about the future can often lead to a fixation on worst-case scenarios, even when there’s no real evidence these scenarios are coming to pass. You end up torturing yourself with scenarios that play over and over again in your own head.
People may experience anxiety over:
- Upcoming social events
- Work or project deadlines
- Doctor’s visit
- Meetings
The list can be very long, and while many may seem minor to some, they can be quite difficult to deal with for the person experiencing the anxiety. However, there are ways to help to manage and alleviate some of the anxiety we experience in our life:
Start an exercise routine
Regular physical activity is a great way to get your body into shape, and that also comes with some other great benefits. It can regularly help rid the body of excessive stress chemicals, help clear the mind, and can even boost your overall mood. Rather than looking at exercise as a purely physical activity, it should be looked at as a means to help improve your overall well-being. Also, being active makes you less likely to mope about and ruminate.
Start a Journal
Writing has always been a good way to express how we feel. For many, they are able to express their thoughts and feelings in a way that they may not be able to verbally. Sometimes, how we think and feel can be so complex that writing helps us to order and organise our thoughts and feelings. When we are able to organise ourselves better, we’re able to more easily put things into perspective and can help to negate some of the overthinking and overanalysing that’s often associated with anxiety.
Talking to someone
Taking the step to talk to someone can be a powerful decision in helping you deal with things that are overwhelming you. Sometimes, it’s not even about finding a solution, but the act of talking to someone can be cathartic. Like writing, it is an avenue that allows you to organise your thoughts and feelings, and this can bring a great deal of relief.
While these won’t solve all your problems, they can help alleviate some of the symptoms with anxiety. Understanding when it’s just a passing feeling and when you need to take action can be critical for your long-term mental and emotional well-being. Of course, counselling can also be a great option if you need it.
