How to get past overthinking?

How to get past overthinking?

A lot of us overthink, and for the most part, it is normal. However, it can get to the point where overthinking gets to be debilitating. Funny enough, getting past overthinking then becomes something you have to think about.

Overthinking is when you dwell on the same thing over and over again. Repeatedly worrying over a thought, topic, or issue can end up causing you to delay actions that you need to take to progress. This can have minor and major implications in your life and career.

For example, you may have trouble deciding what to eat because you’re worried about the health implications of the choices available to you. While this may seem silly and a bit petty, the delay in making a choice can end up in an unhealthy relationship with food, binge eating, and potentially contributing to an eating-related disorder.

Overthinking can lead you to think too long about choices you need to make regarding your career. For instance, when you receive an opportunity to jump to a different position, department or to a different company altogether. Granted, these are important decisions and need to be well-thought out; but overthinking it can end up in delaying your decision making, and in many cases, these offers and openings have a limited lifespan. You could end up missing the opportunity for major career progression. Missing that could mean losing out on higher wages, bigger opportunities, access to more interesting things to do, and other future opportunities.

I’ve always believed that getting past overthinking requires taking small actions instead of just dwelling on the thought. For example, if you’re at a stage of your life where you’re considering changing your career to doing something more meaningful, instead of just thinking about it, you could start by doing some research online. You probably are already drawn towards something. You can start by doing more research and follow that up by getting a brochure, then picking up the phone to make a call to do some enquiry.

You can get some input from your spouse, family member, or friends. I’ve often found that our closest group of friends and family are likely to goad us forward when we get stuck in decision making. Often, that push from people we love and respect can be what’s needed to take the next step.

While some people may do better making bold, large steps to get past their indecisiveness, I think for most people, they are better served taking small incremental action, and over time, can lead to the change in their life that they wanted or needed.

Being able to make decisions in a timely manner is important, not just to catch any opportunities that may come by, but also increases your ability to make decisions going forward. They say, practice makes perfect.
