How to pick yourself up when you’re down

Life can sometimes be tough, and we all have those moments when everything seems to be going in the wrong direction. It could be a failed exam, a failing relationship, or losing a job, it can be easy to get stuck in a downward spiral and feel like you can’t bounce back. However, you can pick yourself up, no matter how difficult the situation may seem. There are some things you can do to help.

Acknowledge your feelings
Picking yourself up often requires you to acknowledge how you’re feeling instead of pretending you’re alright. It’s okay to feel upset, disappointed, or angry. The tendency is to try to suppress your emotions or pretend that everything is fine. Instead, take some time to consider your feelings and let yourself process them. Once you start acknowledging your emotions you can start to work through them.

Take a break
When things feel overwhelming, taking a break can be incredibly helpful. It could be something as simple as going for a walk or taking a nap. Give yourself permission to put your work or study down, take a step back and take care of yourself. Very often, taking a break can give us much needed time and space to get a clearer perspective on things, allowing us to start tackling our problems again.

Focus on the present moment
When going through a difficult time, it’s easy to get caught up in negative thoughts about the past or worries about the future. However, dwelling on these thoughts won’t help you move forward. Instead, try to focus on the present moment and think about the things you can do right now. The appeal of finding big wins and big solutions to our problems can often give us a false sense of hope in a future that is more fantasy than reality. Making small gains by taking small steps can add up to big changes over time.

Practice self-care
Taking care of yourself is crucial when you’re trying to pick yourself up. Make sure you’re eating well, getting enough sleep, and exercising regularly. These basic self-care practices can help you feel better physically and mentally. You could also try activities like yoga or meditation, which can help you relax and reduce stress.

Reach out for help
Sometimes, we need help from others to pick ourselves up. Don’t be afraid to reach out to friends, family, or a professional for support. Talking to someone can help you gain perspective and come up with new ideas for how to move forward. There’s no shame in asking for help when you need it. Keep in mind that people may come for you for this help as well.

Set achievable goals
When you’re feeling down, it can be hard to imagine a better future. Setting achievable goals can help you create a roadmap for how to get there. Start with small, attainable goals that you can work towards every day. It can be anything. For example, you can start by making your bed, then move on to organising your space or cupboard. You can move on to other things like walking 5,000 then 10,000 steps. Celebrate your progress along the way and use it as motivation to keep going.

Picking yourself up is possible, even in the face of adversity, and even when you feel like it isn’t possible. By acknowledging your emotions, taking a break, focusing on the present moment, practicing self-care, reaching out for help, and setting achievable goals, you can start to move forward and create a brighter future.
