Is dyslexia easy to spot?

Is dyslexia easy to spot?

Your child may be doing well in school. They may even be a model student. As a parent and educator, this is always a good sign that the child is developing well and learning.

As the child progresses, you start to see signs of trouble. Their school performance drops significantly; seemingly overnight. The child is having to read and reread because they don’t know what they’re reading. The child is starting to miss out on homework and assignments when previously they were so responsible.

What happened?

  • Is this the child’s fault?
  • Have they just become more lazy?
  • Is this your fault, even?

Children are very clever, and in primary education, they may be smart enough to get around any learning disabilities they may have by essentially ignoring the problem and powering through. They may even excel, but once they start entering secondary school upwards, and the reading material and subject matters become more complex, it gets harder to ignore the problems. Especially with dyslexia; long, complex pages of text start to look arcane and illegible.

When the child shows consistent signs of learning issues, it might be that the child has undiagnosed dyslexia or other learning disabilities that escaped notice til now. However, it is important to note that the child does not necessarily have a learning disorder just because they may have some issues with certain subjects in school. If your child is showing consistent issues with their learning, it’s always recommended to have the child professionally diagnosed to know the best method to help the child develop.
