When people spend so many years doing something so familiar and without much change, there can be a tendency to think that life has passed them by. They may even think it’s too late, and they are too old to start doing something new. Even highly successful people can fall into this mindset.
The truth is, it’s really never too late to start something new. As long as you have an interest and a desire to do it, whatever new thing you wish to embark on is ready for you to step up and start doing.
The biggest challenges to this are mindset and, potentially, fear.
Mindset:
You may have gotten into a state where you think you are simply too old, except there rarely is an age requirement. Unless you’re in advanced age where you may be suffering from mental or physical impairment, health willing, you can and should see yourself as able. If you are willing, you can do it. Being stuck in that mindset that you are too old can hold you back from changing when you need to and may be an obstacle to getting you on track to finding your happiness.
There is no real obstacle preventing you from learning how to dance, taking up a new course for self-improvement, or even going back to school in your mid-age or older. No one will judge you, and in fact, many people find respect for older people who’ve decided to head back to school, or to learn something new.
Fear:
Fear is a big issue, especially if you are already established. When your life is stable, your finances are relatively good, and your career is good, it can be very difficult to take a step back and let some of it go so you can do something different.
You may fear losing that stability, or fear the risks involved with your career and finances, and you may come away thinking you may not be able to find success in your new endeavour. That can effectively hold back what it is you want at this stage of your life, and that comes with its own consequences.
Our life is ever-changing. We grow and develop and at different stages, we may end up needing something else that we didn’t when we were younger.
For example, you may have made the decision to step on a career path because it was financially viable. In doing so, you may have had to push back and suppress your own personal desires. Often this means leaving behind things you loved to do or putting out passion for something you had. Maybe you wanted to be an artist or musician but ended up in a corporate career, but now you’re at a stage of your life where these interests have push back against you and demanding your attention.
At the end of the day, your fear and your mindset may say you shouldn’t do these new things; but if you’ve always wanted to do something else or something new, now is the time to do it. Nobody ever said you’d have to jump in with both feet and throw caution to the wind. You can take one step at a time, make one decision, one action, and see where that leads you.
For all you know, it could lead you to exactly where you’ve wanted to be all along; and that may be where your happiness is.
