Interpreting Accounting and Financial Information

Students will learn to develop a critical understanding of why financial reporting is regulated and how such regulation underpins transparency, comparability, and accountability in corporate practice. It also involves gaining a robust grasp of how published financial statements are constructed, enabling learners to evaluate these reports and generate insightful interpretations for a wide range of users. In addition, students must be able to identify and critically assess the diverse sources of finance available to organisations, recognising their strategic implications. Finally, the study of financial decision‑making theories and techniques equips learners to analyse, evaluate, and apply these frameworks in real‑world contexts, strengthening their capacity to make informed and evidence‑based financial decisions as future professionals

Risk Management

This area of study equips learners with the ability to advise organisational leaders on the effective use of risk frameworks to appraise, evaluate, and support risk management activities. Students will develop the capacity to critically assess differing approaches to risk management and to provide informed, professionally grounded guidance to those responsible for governance. The curriculum also fosters a critical understanding of how the external business environment—including legislation, policy developments, and industry change—shapes organisational risk. In addition, learners will examine how organisational conduct, behaviours, and culture influence risk management practices, enabling them to evaluate these dynamics and contribute to more resilient and responsible decision‑making as future professionals.

Applied Corporate Law

Students will develop a rigorous understanding of applied corporate law by enabling learners to critically analyse and synthesise the legal theories, concepts, and regulatory models that shape the structure and governance of commercial organisations. Students cultivate the ability to evaluate the operation of key aspects of company law and apply legal principles to complex, problem‑based scenarios, demonstrating advanced analytical and interpretive skills. Through engagement with legislation such as the Companies Act 2006, learners gain the capacity to form well‑reasoned judgements and propose workable legal solutions in challenging contexts. The module also prepares students to advise on the application of corporate legal principles within real business environments, taking into account external regulatory demands and the practical realities of organisational structures and practices.

Corporate Secretarial Practice

Students will develop a sophisticated understanding of corporate secretarial practice by enabling learners to critically analyse the scope, responsibilities, and strategic functions of the company secretary in ensuring board diligence and organisational compliance. Students examine the secretary’s role in facilitating effective communication at micro, meso, and macro levels, supporting regulatory adherence and stakeholder engagement within a dynamic corporate environment. The module also encourages critical self‑reflection, requiring learners to evaluate their own communication capabilities, emotional intelligence, and leadership behaviours in diverse professional contexts. In addition, students gain the ability to assess and take responsibility for the ongoing duties of the secretary as a professional practitioner, including their commitment to continuous personal and organisational development within the secretariat.

The Practice of Governance, Leadership and Strategy

Students will develop an advanced understanding of governance, leadership, and strategic practice by enabling learners to critically evaluate the theories, concepts, and models that inform organisational strategy, environmental analysis, capability assessment, and risk evaluation. Students learn to appraise strategic options within the realities of stakeholder expectations, organisational purpose, resource constraints, and reputational considerations in a dynamic business environment. The module also deepens theoretical and conceptual knowledge of corporate governance and organisational ethics, highlighting their influence on purpose, behaviour, and strategic action. In addition, learners examine the governance responsibilities of directors, boards, and senior executives in shaping and implementing effective strategy. Finally, students synthesise and critically assess the role of risk, ethics, rationality, and underlying assumptions in senior‑level decision‑making, preparing them to contribute thoughtfully and responsibly to organisational leadership.

Boardroom Dynamics

This module provides students with a critical understanding of boardroom dynamics and their growing significance in contemporary organisational governance. Learners explore the multiple facets that shape interactions within the boardroom and evaluate how these dynamics influence the quality of relationships, decision‑making processes, organisational culture, diversity, and overall board effectiveness. The module also develops the ability to assess and apply both formal and informal methods for positively influencing boardroom behaviour, enabling students to contribute to enhanced board performance and more effective governance practice as future professionals

Leadership, Governance & People Management Dissertation

This dissertation module enables learners to design and execute an independent research project in leadership, governance, and people management. Students develop the ability to justify a clear set of terms of reference, formulate a focused research question, and select an ethically appropriate methodology. They engage critically with existing theoretical and empirical literature, gather and analyse primary evidence, and interpret their findings to draw well‑reasoned conclusions. The module also emphasises reflective practice through the production of a Dissertation Learning Statement, encouraging students to evaluate how their knowledge, skills, and professional attributes were applied throughout the research process and how these insights will inform their future professional development.
