Almost everyone has something they don’t like about themselves. For many people, these things may not be something they feel they can do anything about. What if you could change it though?
This goes beyond just your appearance.
For many of us, we have some issue about ourselves we know we should change, but don’t. This could range from personality to behavioural issues.
Maybe you are addicted to something, know it, but can’t stop. This has nothing to do with drugs or anything like that. It’s much more pedestrian, but a problem, all the same. There are coffee drinkers who want to ease or stop drinking coffee completely, but can’t. There are people who are addicted to sugar to the point they can’t stop drinking soda and have to consume it in their foods. Getting past these addictions can be difficult to the point people just don’t try.
Maybe you have anger management issues but still have problems managing it. You’ve likely received feedback from other people on this, and in most cases, you already know the problem, but you can’t stop exploding in anger over the smallest things. This issue has likely cause a lot of interpersonal conflicts and you know you have to resolve it, but still haven’t. It’s not easy to manage.
Maybe you have attachment issues and it has cause problems in maintaining your relationships. Your attachment issues could be making you too needy and clingy or maybe you are just commitment averse. Either way, you may be having problems forming and maintaining relationships. You could be pushing people away who get too close, or trying too hard to keep them to the point they feel overwhelmed and withdraw. You end up feeling lonely all the time and wish you weren’t.
There are some things that can’t be changed, but there are many things about ourselves that we can change. Behaviour can change, with the right amount of self-awareness, self-care, and commitment. Even for things you think are “unfixable”, they can be managed when given the right attention and commitment. For example, being disagreeable is something you can manage if you are conscious about it.
Changing things about yourself isn’t just about doing it for the sake of doing it. You want to change something about yourself because you know deep down there is a problem that needs addressing. You just don’t know how to go about addressing it, or even know how to start the process of addressing it. Sadly, for many of us, we tend to sweep it under the rug because we don’t know how to resolve it.
There are ways to start the process, possibly even to address it; but you have to take the initiative to look after yourself. Give yourself some attention, self-reflect, think about what you want for yourself, and why it hasn’t happened.
At the end of the day, your happiness is at stake.
Join us at College of Allied Educators to learn more about yourself, what motivates you, and how you can find happiness, meaning, and success in work, love, and life.
