What’s stopping you from finding happiness?

What’s stopping you from finding happiness?

There are good days, there are bad days. Connected together they represent our life path and choices made, leading us to our goals. Having obstacles or unfortunate days from time to time does not mean that we are unhappy, but it begs the question – are we stopping ourselves from happiness, and can it be changed?

Are you giving yourself time off?
When was the last time you took 30 minutes and sat around doing nothing, focussing on nothing but your breathing, connecting only with yourself? It’s probably been a while.

When we take the time to become aware of ourselves, we awaken our consciousness and things we do will have meaning. Doing something meaningful makes us happy. If you do things that have no meaning, your days will be filled with apathy, you will lack inspiration and undervalue your own abilities. This lack of motivation can be a source of boredom and stress, which weakens the whole body and can easily make you ill. If you are not giving yourself enough time off to reflect and be with yourself, you risk stress, boredom, and poor health.

Are you too much of a perfectionist about everything?
There is nothing wrong with having high standards, but it can often lead to misplaced expectations, which can lead to many sleepless nights. The reality is that things don’t always go as planned, no matter how hard you’ve worked to make everything perfect. You have to learn to accept that you can’t plan for every eventuality and deal with any unexpected outcome. In the end, everything that matters is how you’ve handled the unplanned situation. Once you learn to accept this, you learn to appreciate the process as much as any outcome.

Are you spending too much time in enclosed spaces?
You will be surprised how rejuvenating the effect of spending time in nature is. Make sure you go for a walk in a park or nearby forest at least once per week. Reconnecting with nature helps you to reconnect with yourself and make you think more clearly, away from all the city noise, rush-hours and things you have to get done. Just sit, listen and enjoy.

Too often, we get in our own way and stop ourselves from finding happiness when we are too hard on ourselves, and don’t give ourselves enough time and space to introspect.
