Are you that special needs educator you always knew you’d be?

Are you that special needs educator you always knew you’d be?

I think it’s fair to say that being a special needs educator is a special calling. It’s not something most people think they’re going to be when they grow up. For many, it’s something that they realise over time, and then grow into. This could be due to their personal experiences with family members who have special needs, especially children. This could also be due to a deep desire to work with and help people who need the extra care and consideration.

People who are thinking about working with children with special needs have likely thought long and hard about it. They see an opportunity for them to help in a way others may not be able to, and these types of people can already be educators, from care facilities, or even come from a completely different career line.

The desire to do something more meaningful can often be a powerful calling, even for people who are already committed to a different career path and field. When you’re dealing with exceptional children, or feel the calling to work with them, you will need to be specially trained!  You will need to understand the different types of exceptional children and all their intellectual, emotional and physical disabilities and needs.

They might have developmental issues such as:

  • Down syndrome
  • Autism
  • Dyslexia

They may have behavioral/Emotional issues such as:

  • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
  • Bipolarism
  • Oppositional Defiance Disorder

There are also many children who may not overtly show signs of requiring special help but may still need it regardless. The tools you will learn can translate to helping you deal with a variety of issues and cases and can make you a powerful and positive influence for people under your care!

College of Allied Educators offers our Diploma in Education (Special Needs), that provides an essential introduction to the various categories of exceptional children and educational programmes available. The course will also train you to confidently design and implement an Individualised Education Plan or IEP to aid in specific areas such as language and communications.

This is a 6-month, part-time programme that will allow you to continue onto the Advanced Diploma in Special Education, a 12-month course that trains educators and parents in the with the knowledge and skills to identify, understand, and support children with diverse learning and developmental needs and the basic principles and practices of effective teaching and learning.
