Let’s face it, children aren’t always easy to understand. There is a tendency among adults to assume children are simpler than adults, but children can be very complex, and while their behaviour can often tell us their mindset, it can just as well end up doing the opposite!
The reality is that understanding children is not an easy task due to the broad and deep nature of everything that contributes to their development. Genetics, environmental influences, socio-economic influences, personality development and cognitive development are just some of the many factors that influence children’s psychology, how they think, how they relate to the world and their relations with other people.
- Why does your child act out in one situation and not others?
- Why do they seem to relate to some people better than others?
- Why do they respond to certain learning methods and not others?
- Why aren’t they making more friends?
Even trying to understand why a child lashes out isn’t always so straightforward. While it may be that some children are able to overcome this by having better developed communication skills, sometimes they may lash out because they don’t understand how to manage their feelings of disappointment or other complex emotions.
It may even be frustration that they feel others aren’t listening to them or taking them seriously. In such situations, adults sometimes contribute to the child’s behaviour and end up not properly assessing what is happening with the child.
If you take the steps necessary to understand your child or children under your care, you’ll see that it requires taking the child seriously, and not seeing them as children, but as complex individuals that have needs and feelings that have to be addressed. Taking the time to listen to them “ramble” about what you may consider inconsequential things, may give that child the time and to express their feelings and thoughts. Often, knowing that someone is listening to them and giving them that attention is enough to alleviate a lot of their frustrations and anxiety.
To understand your child better, you have to give them the time they need, even if they don’t know it themselves. Understanding them may also help in understanding yourself better as well; and in such cases, it can be very valuable knowing when your child needs professional assessment for any learning disorders or developmental delays.
