What’s your plan for managing classroom disruptions?

What’s your plan for managing classroom disruptions?

Managing a roomful of children can often be very difficult. It can be chaotic and stressful at times. For parents and educators managing a roomful of children with special needs, this can be very challenging as it may require extra patience, knowledge, and skills to accommodate the different needs of the students under their care.

Classroom disruptions happen as a matter of course, but especially for children with special needs, these disruptions can have a major impact on their learning, as well as create additional distress for them. Learning how to manage these disruptions is essential to creating a healthy and conducive learning environment for them.

With the right strategies and techniques, it is possible to create a positive learning environment for all students. There are various methods and approaches for managing disruptive classroom behaviours:

  • Pre-empt the disruption: Look for signs of anxiety and over-activity in the child, like excessive fidgeting. Then pre-emptively assign the child to a class-specific task to divert and refocus their attention.
  • Learn to identify triggers that cause the child to act up: Pace the learning so students have enough time to digest and understand what’s going on. In many cases, a student acting up can be the result of their inability to grasp what’s being taught in class.
  • Creating a positive culture: you can create a positive classroom culture by building positive relationships with your students and creating a sense of community. Give students an opportunity to actively collaborate and share their ideas so everyone becomes a part of the positive vibe in the classroom.
  • Manage your own emotions: Your frustrations may exacerbate the disruptions. It’s important to remain calm so that you can find a way to de-escalate that particular situation.
