Can anxiety overwhelm people?

Can anxiety overwhelm people?

Anxiety is an emotion that leads to excessive fear, worry, and apprehension. It’s perfectly normal to experience fear, worry, or apprehension, and doesn’t require too much attention to resolving. These are temporary feelings. However, prolonged anxiety can become a huge problem for a lot of people, either due to mental illness or prolonged exposure to a negative situation and environment. A lot of times, people don’t even know exactly why they feel this way.

Anxiety is one of the most common group of mental illness but only 40% of people ever receive any help or treatment for it. The symptoms include:

  • nausea
  • fatigue
  • weakness
  • chronic illness
  • insomnia
  • undetermined physical pain
  • chronic pain
  • hyperventilation
  • panic attacks
  • obsessive thoughts and behaviours

Though some people are more genetically predisposed to anxiety and anxiety disorders, many people experience anxiety and may develop anxiety disorders as a result of work stress, home stress, financial stress, and often, traumatic life experiences.

The good news is that anxiety is highly treatable. Once it has been properly diagnosed, anxiety can be managed through medication, counselling, therapy, and via support groups. Most people who seek treatment recover well and are able to manage it better to some degree.

One of the difficulties of anxiety is getting people to seek help for it. Most people ignore it to their own detriment.
