Is something wrong with me if I seek counselling?

A common misconception about counselling is that it is mainly sought for mentally ill patients or for people with something wrong about them. This is not always the case. Counselling helps people who suffer from acute or general stress or distress over certain situations in their life. It helps people towards recovery by facing their fears. Counselling benefits people who may be going through a particularly tough emotional phase or upheaval. They may be feeling insecure or having a difficult time accepting life changes. The counsellor plays a part here, helping people to be conscious about their own thoughts, feelings, and situation.

The other misunderstanding is that counsellors should fix problems. The truth is, only the person can fix whatever it is that is troubling them. The role of the counsellor is to lead the patient along the process of understanding and healing. A Good counsellor will have to listen and identify the probably causes of the problem and reflect that to the person. Counsellors listen and seek to understand people’s thoughts, motivations, and emotions to help them find their healing and happiness.

The stigma associated with seeking help from a counsellor is, unfortunately, still prevalent, though improving. People still are hesitant to seek counselling for fear of looking weak or showing weakness. Some may take the step to seek counselling but then postpone their sessions due to their fears of being found out as being broken individuals. Counselling sessions are strictly private, and counsellors follow a code of ethics for their profession. Nobody will judge those seeking help, and your secret is safe.

Mental health is hard to treat and heal because it is not touchable and is not something that we see or can easily reach; but many who have sought counselling regret not starting sooner when they advance through their counselling sessions.
