For the majority of us, we aren’t really alone. We have our family, friends, colleagues, and maybe even pets. For most of us, we are meeting new people and forming new relationships on a relatively consistent basis. Even though this is the case, so many people still feel alone in the world.
There is a sad irony that there are large groups of people who still feel so alone in the world despite being surrounded by people; perhaps even for the majority of their waking lives. Perhaps even you feel alone, even sometimes.
It’s perfectly normal to feel alone when you’re sitting alone at night and deep in thought, but this sense of loneliness that so many people feel isn’t just physical.
- We can feel alone if the people we are with ignore us, or aren’t giving us the attention that we want or need. We crave attention; but not just any attention. We crave the right kind of attention from people we care about. We crave the right kind of attention from people we are trying to impress.
- We can feel alone when we feel like we don’t know our purpose in life, or even in a job or function. It can make us feel listless and directionless. Not having a purpose can make people feel a sense of being lost and alone.
- We can feel alone in a situation where there is unrequited love, affection, or attention. This particular situation can feel intense and that sense of loneliness can sometimes even feel like total isolation. Perhaps because emotionally, we feel that we’re shut out.
- We can feel alone when something bad happens to us. You’ve probably felt this way when you lost someone you love, or lost a friendship, or lost a job. In fact, there is a good chance that even when something fantastic happens to you, you can feel an acute sense of loneliness. People in this situation sometimes report that they feel immensely lonely when they discover that they feel like they have no one to share their joy and accomplishments with.
While we may have people around us, it’s very possible for us to feel like we’re completely alone. What triggers this sense of loneliness can be different from one person to the next, due to different circumstances, support level from family and friends, or even our upbringing. Some people go through their entire lives not knowing what it feels like to know the satisfaction of love, company, friendship, or companionship; because they lacked this in their early upbringing. For some, it could be a personal fear, or character flaw that drives them away from the very thing they need and want.
For you, this may be different. There is a reason why you feel lonely at times. Perhaps it’s time you gave it more thought rather than dismissed it away as a passing thing.
