We should all know that being healthy can help tremendously in feelings of wellness and happiness, but when people talk about being healthy, it is usually about physical health.
Physical health is important. You will feel better and experience improved mood when you consistently eat right, engage in regular exercise, and get enough rest and sleep. Physical health is a key component in helping to shape how you feel; but there are other important areas to consider as well.
What about our mental health?
Mental health is just as important as physical health. In many instances, it may even be more important; especially if it leads to improving or degrading your physical health.
Mental health is the state and condition of our psychological, emotional, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and look at ourselves and our outlook on the world. It helps to determine how we process the things that happen to us, and things like stress, and anxiety, or happiness are deeply affected by the state of our mental health.
There is such a thing as having poor mental health. This can occur in a number of ways, but generally happens when you don’t take enough time and consideration for yourself. Like physical health, maintaining your mental health requires regular upkeep and maintenance. It can change for the better or the worse, depending on how much effort and consideration you put in.
For example, how much time do you put into being thankful for things you have, or good things that happen to you?
If you’re like most people, you probably don’t think about it all that often; but as trivial as it may seem, taking a few minutes to regularly think about all the good things you have in your life and being thankful for them can really keep away the negativity. Pessimism can really take away any sense of hope and chance for happiness because you can only see the negative and bad in the situation. Actively thinking about this, and acknowledging things that happen for you can truly help to beat back the negativity in your life.
Imagine if all you ever though about was failing any time you considered doing something. Maybe you want to make a life change and do something you have wanted for years; but you keep telling yourself you’ll just fail and lose your job and money.
Maintaining your mental health means you can look at that and say to yourself you have an opportunity to so something, and even the opportunity itself is a wonderful thing. It means you have choice in your life and have control over what you will or will not do.
Many times, not having enough rest and poor physical health can also negatively affect your mental health. If you’re physically ill, in pain, discomfort, or just lacking rest, you’re not going to be able to think clearly. That means you aren’t going to be able to think clearly about yourself or the situation you find yourself in every day; and that means missed opportunities for growth and development and a sense that something is always wrong.
Maintaining your mental health is like maintaining your physical health. You need to actively take care of yourself. Get enough rest, take some time and consideration to care for yourself and your needs and desires. Don’t brush it off every time you feel sad, lonely, or just down on your luck.
You have to learn how to take care of yourself, and when you can do that, you’ll start to see your life improving in various ways.
