As people go about living their lives, it’s all too common for them to become overly critical of things, and they end up finding themselves in a pessimistic mindset that starts to permeate every aspect of their life.
It can happen to anyone despite their inclinations; and can happen for any number of reasons. You’ve probably known some people who used to be happy and care free, but now are bogged down by negativity. The negativity could be surrounding their future prospects, career, finances, life opportunities, relationships, or anything. Perhaps you’re even feeling the same way.
This could be due to many reasons. It could be due to:
- years of stress
- anxiety
- career not working out as you envisioned
- failures in one or more areas of your life
- personal unresolved emotional and mental issues
Over time, when left unattended, can build up to a point where it slowly changes how you feel, think and look at yourself and the world. You can become more critical, pessimistic, less hopeful, unsatisfied, less happy.
It doesn’t have to be that way, and there are ways to take back some control. It starts by doing relatively simply, daily activities:
Taking time off every day for yourself.
This can potentially be a huge improvement to your quality of life. In this day and age where speed and efficiency in all things means you end up moving and never stopping throughout your day; full-day stress can be a common thing. Sitting down, taking a break in between all your activities could give you back control over yourself. Take some time to breath, have a drink, and just relax; preferably you should not be doing anything else. The tendency would be to do something that then ends up being about work or responsibility you’re trying to take a break from.
Taking these intermittent breaks may be seen as disruptive to your tasks and activities, but you are disrupting these things for a good reason: your own mental and emotional health.
Instead, just enjoy your time with yourself. Think about things; maybe even daydream and take this opportunity to take stock of the good things in your life. It could even be about good things that happened on that day. Maybe all the lights were green on your way to work, or someone was polite to you.
If you do this every day, you may start to appreciate your own personal time a lot more, and could clear your head and heart of things that bog you down on a day to day basis. This should give you a clearer perspective on your life, and at the very least, may help to deal with your daily stress levels so it doesn’t just build and build until you can’t effectively deal with it any longer.
