Reach out & help someone this holiday season.

Reach out & help someone this holiday season.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year: holidays and parties, presents and get-togethers, and festivals with many things to do. What happens is that we get busy during the season, and do not notice when others around us are alone, depressed, and needing help. They may be invisible to us, due to the business of the year, but their need is still real.

Do you know what to look for so you can reach out to family members, co-workers, and friends when they may need it the most?

One of the biggest things to look out for is if the person is withdrawing from company more and more. If they are missing work, missing lunches, not showing up for gatherings and Christmas parties, It is a glaring sign that something is wrong in their world; and it is a way for them to cry out for help when the words will not come.

When thinking about who to invite to special holiday events, think about this as well. Someone who is depressed may look or feel sad, or have no emotions, or even may get irritable and angry for no real reason. They may complain of vague health symptoms or problems sleeping.

People that feel alone can live in a painful space. We are designed to be social creatures, and being cut off from others is detrimental to our health and well-being. During the holidays, reach out to people that are alone most of the time, or talk about not having anyone in their lives. Even just looking out for someone talking about feeling alone can be enough.

While these are some behaviors, or groups of people, that likely need some extra care and friendship during the holidays, there are many others out there that need it as well. It never feels good to be alone, depressed, or hurting, and now more than ever we need to come together to help each other through these times. Make sure no one is alone during this period.

That’s the real magic of the season.
