There comes a stage in life when you’ve reached a point you feel an important life decision must be made. We tend to think of this point as happening in mid-life or later but can also happen much earlier. This decision you have to make may feel nearly impossible to make because the stakes are so high. This is the crossroads where you can decide to turn left, right, or continue forward.
Many people end up feeling stuck once they reach this juncture in their life because the decision is a major one that could change everything or nothing. The decision to continue on your current path could mean going about your life unhappy and doing things you find to be unsatisfactory.
The problem with making a major life changing decision is that you can’t be 100% sure it’s going to be the right decision. You may decide you want to change your career and find the career to be unsuitable for you. Even if you make the decision, you may likely have to give up your current career progress to restart on something else. This could bring financial instability as well as introduce a lot of stress and anxiety for yourself and your relationships with close friends and family.
When you look at it like that, of course it is understandable why anyone would feel stuck. There’s a lot of uncertainty involved; but not making a decision means you’ll continue in your current path and trajectory. If you’re unsatisfied with something now, you’ll likely be unsatisfied with it tomorrow, the day after, and the year after that. If you want to change your life, you have to decide what it is you are going to change it to, and that requires you to know what it is you want from yourself, and from life in general.
Nobody can do that for you because everyone has a different idea of what they want for themselves. Part of the key to getting past this roadblock is to figure out what it is you want for yourself. You have to take some time and put some effort into trying to understand yourself and what it is that motivates you, or what dreams you have for your life.
For example, if you are someone who has always had an interest in people and how they think and feel, and you have an altruistic nature, you may gravitate towards counselling psychology. However, this may not have been a first choice in your career path, yet after years of developing your career, you’ve come around to seriously thinking about what it is that motivates and interests you. Perhaps your career is not satisfying the purpose you feel you were meant for, and you’re feeling the pull of a feeling you’ve left unattended for too long.
What is it that is motivating you?
The more you understand yourself, the less insurmountable the decisions ahead of you. The more you know about yourself, the more you’ll be able to make your decisions based off of your needs and desires, with understanding on the sacrifices you may have to make in the process. Only you can decide if the sacrifice is worth it. In the end, it could be your happiness at stake.
Join us at College of Allied Educators to learn more about yourself, what motivates you, and how you can find happiness, meaning, and success in work, love, and life.
