How do I know if my child’s speech and language is delayed?

The development of a child’s speech and language development tend to follow a known pattern. It’s not always a cause for concern if a child’s development is a little slower than typical as children do develop at different paces. There are things you can watch out for.

You should consider seeking a professional evaluation for the child if by the 24th month the child is displaying these symptoms:

  • the child is primarily using gestures rather than vocalising to communicate
  • the child still has problems understanding simple verbal requests and instructions
  • the child is repeating words without constructing words or phrases spontaneously

Many parents and educators may see slow language development as something children eventually outgrow, but evidence suggests that sometimes they don’t. Children who have delays in language and speech development may be more at risk for learning disabilities. Even children who outgrow the initial difficulties sometimes show signs of learning disabilities from age 6 onwards.
