Everyone is trying to find their way in the world, whether they are young or old. Each person is trying to find happiness, but for many of us, we aren’t really sure exactly what happiness really is. We have an idea of what we think will make us happy; and often, it’s grinded into us over years that we’ll need to be successful. It is assumed happiness will follow that success.
We know that we have to find ways to define what happiness is. In many cases, success is defined by career and financial success; but is that all it means to be successful?
It’s very possible that earning more doesn’t really add much more to your sense of happiness. There are enough anecdote flying around that people who end up making more money may be able to change their lifestyles, but it doesn’t necessarily change how happy that feel. For some, more money just changes what they worry about, and they end up back where they began; still looking for what makes them happy.
Instead, maybe we can consider how we define success.
- Being successful could mean we’ve reached a point in our self-development where we feel like we’ve reached an important milestone.
- Being successful could mean our relationships are running smoothly, and we have supportive friends and family that we love, and who love us back.
- Being successful could mean we’re doing something we really want, even if it’s not financially rewarding. For example, volunteering for a good cause.
There are many ways for us to be successful, and even if you believe financial success is a major part of your happiness, there is a good chance you have a deep longing for doing something for yourself or for others that don’t involve making more money.
Maybe your happiness is right there for you to find.
